The cloud computing paradigm creates an illusion that resources are unlimited, a user can always launch an application and expect it to perform as needed. Even on a HCI, it is perceived that it can always scale with additions of nodes. But have you encountered that an application does not perform at the expected level after put into use? On a public cloud, like AWS, users can choose from a large number of EC2 instances with different combinations of vCPUs, memory size, network bandwidth and storage throughput. On a HCI, users can also increase the number of vCPUs and memory size of VM instances. This may work in some occasions. This kind of constraints is nonexistent in a legacy VMware environment where third-party SAN storage, instead of vSAN, are used.
